Two weeks ago, popular torrent site KickassTorrents shut down after the FBI arrested founder Artem Vaulin. Now it looks like another torrent site has shut down – but for unknown reasons.
Active for more than 13 years and founded a couple of weeks before The Pirate Bay, Torrentz.eu was one of the more popular torrenting sites, in addition to KickassTorrents and The Pirate Bay. The website announced its shut down earlier today. The main page remains active but the operator stripped out the search engine and torrent links.
Torrentz.eu didn’t host torrents itself but rather served as a metasearch engine. It indexed torrents from a large number of trackers for millions of users every day. The site now refers to itself in the past tense, saying:
“Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.”
The operator of Torrentz who has yet to offer a public comment contacted TorrentFreak to relay the news. Although the website wasn’t a torrent host, certain rightsholders were unhappy with its presence. RIAA and MPAA reported the site to the U.S. government on multiple occasions, and the government put the site on its annual Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets.
Although mirror sites of KickassTorrents have already appeared to take its place, no one knows if the same will happen to Torrentz.eu.
We’ll always love you Torrentz. Farewell.
